IBM claims world’s first sub-1 nanometer chip technology

IBM has announced a new chip architecture it calls the world’s first sub-1 nanometer technology, claiming it can pack nearly 100 billion transistors onto a chip the size of a human fingernail [1]. The company says the design, built at what it terms the 0.7-nanometer or 7 angstrom node, targets AI data centers [1]. The technology relies on a “nanostack” architecture that IBM says delivers performance and energy-efficiency gains roughly double the transistor density of its previous generation [1]. Jay Gambetta, director of IBM Research, described the advance as “not just an incremental step, it’s a meaningful leap forward” [1]. He added that the chip points to a future where computing becomes significantly more powerful without a corresponding increase in energy [1]. IBM’s node designation does not refer to any physical dimension on the chip. The company acknowledges that building reliably functional transistors smaller than 1 nanometer is impractical due to physical limits [1]. Instead, the 0.7-nanometer label is a marketing term meant to signal a generational leap in transistor density, speed, and power efficiency [1]. The semiconductor industry has used such nomenclature for years. For example, the term “2 nm” has no relation to actual gate length or metal pitch; the 2021 International Roadmap for Devices and Systems projected a contacted gate pitch of 45 nanometers for that node [2]. Similarly, the “5 nm” node is expected to have a gate length of 18 nm and a contacted gate pitch of 51 nm [3]. IBM’s announcement comes as other major chipmakers are ramping their most advanced processes. TSMC began volume production of its 2 nm node in the fourth quarter of 2025, while Samsung started mass production of its first-generation 2 nm process the same year, with yields reported in the 50–60% range into early 2026 [2]. Intel advanced its Intel 18A process, a 1.8 nm-class node, to high-volume manufacturing in late 2025 [2]. By contrast, IBM is positioning its 0.7-nanometer node as a leap beyond those technologies, though it has not disclosed a timeline for commercial production [1]. Gambetta, a scientist who also leads IBM’s quantum computing research, has overseen projects including the 1,121-qubit IBM Condor processor unveiled in 2023 and the IBM Quantum System One, the first circuit-based commercial quantum computer introduced in 2019 [5][6][7]. IBM’s latest chip announcement extends its research portfolio deeper into classical computing for AI workloads [1].
