Standard Language Ideology in AI-Generated Language
Large language models systematically reinforce standard language ideology, granting prestige and authority to certain language varieties while marginalizing others, according to a new paper from researcher Genevieve Smith and collaborators on arXiv [1]. The paper introduces the concept of "standard AI-generated language ideology," describing a process through which LLMs position Standard American English as the linguistic default and reinforce the perception that it is the most appropriate form of communication [2][3].
